Modesteat is a multimedia project taking back the image of brown bodies in the role of mother and demystifying the act of breastfeeding. The show is two-fold taking place over two floors of installations.

featuring the work of artist Sandie Luna. 


Modesteat is a multimedia project taking back the image of brown bodies in the role of mother and demystifying the act of breastfeeding. The exhibition will take place over two floors of installations in midtown Manhattan. 

 

Modesteat aims to spark the imagination and conversations around the mothering body and its agency.

 

SCHEDULE:

FRIDAY 5/11, 5-8pm Opening Reception 
SATURDAY 5/12, 1-7pm Exhibition and Panels  (details below)

Modesteat looks to define the mothering body as a powerful and resilient political tool that stands against the pressures of financial and cultural aggression while challenging the limited representation of mothers of color.

Friday - sunday:

 The main floor is a journey inside the identity of a brown woman’s body, psyche, and cultural syncretism through images from past and present, of women from near and far.


Punto's Lower Level will be setup as a video installation breaking down the act of breastfeeding - with no modesty.

On this day guests can visit the installations and participate in engaging talks ranging from Reproductive Justice to creativity in motherhood.  Details below. 

 SATURDAY 5/12 PANELS - INFO:

Activist Natalie Pena will present a timeline of the history of Reproductive Justice and its implications in today's social climate.

  Can doing the most creative thing

a human can do (raising a child)   leave room for other forms of creative expression? What happens to a project deferred?

 

A group of creatives from different fields will engage in a community discussion about creativity and its expression during motherhood.

SANDIE LUNA

Sandie Luna is an artist, entrepreneur, currently training to be a birth worker. She is Co-Founder of Punto Space, a 2015 Dominicanas in the Mix (DITM) honoree, an award presented by the Dominican American National Foundation. As an Afro-Latina, born in the Dominican Republic, raised in Miami, with deep roots in New York City and having lived in Europe, Sandie is versed in straddling worlds and has moved from a position of awaiting opportunity to creating it for herself and others. She maintains the role of Director of Business Development of PUNTO Space and also continues to be heavily involved in the arts as the co-founder of the Nettles Artists Collective and as a performer, director and producer.
